Spanish American War Veterans

Monday, May 26th, 2008

As is my tradition, every Memorial Day I try to remember veterans who have served to protect our country. This year I chose to add the names of Company I 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers who served in the Spanish American War. Also included on this new page are the women that aided and assisted from the homefront. These men were mustered out of Superior, Wisconsin

The Spanish American War Veteran page can be found here.

The information was excerpted from the book “Right forward, fours right, march!” a little story of Company I, Third wisconsin Volunteers, First Brigade, First Division, First Corps, (1900). Author Emanuel Rossiter

E.B. Wolcott GAR Post

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I added photos to the photo gallery of members of the E.B. Wolcott GAR Post No. 1 in Milwaukee.

These photos are mainly of officers. The book was published in 1892.

A transcription of the book is in the Military section of the site.

Sgt Walter R. Battenberg Family

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I recently received this inquiry. If anyone out there knows relatives of this family or can offer assistance in anyway, please contact me or the Connie. They have been looking for the family since 2001 so any help would be appreciated. Thank you for looking.

I am searching for the family of Sgt Walter R. Battenberg who was KIA in WWII on 3/24/45. He was from Milwaukee WI. I found his name on your web site. My uncle was the pilot of the B-24 that was shot down. All were killed in action. We have a wealth of information that we would like to share with his family. The crash site has been located and 2 memorials have been put in place in Germany. So far we have been unable to locate the family.
We would appreciate it if you could hopefully give us a direction for our search.
Sincerely,
Connie

Civil War Draft

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Someone emailed me a few days ago and asked where the civil war regiments were organized. He thought it was a park or somewhere in the city. I found more information in an article written in 1895 in the Freeman. I am posting it here in hopes that he will find it, since I no longer have his email. I have added it to Waukesha in the Civil War pages.

DRAFTS IN THE COUNTY

The first draft followed close on the heels of the filling of the 28th regiment. The enlistment, large as it seemed, was not enough. (more…)

Where did all the Rootsweb pages go?

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

For years, USGenWeb was graciously given free server space for their completely free state and county sites by an organization called Rootsweb. A number of years ago, Rootsweb was purchased by the same company that owns Ancestry.com. Recently this company made some changes in the way their URL render. The new URL for these pages is rootsweb.ancestry.com

Since perception is everything, a number of the volunteers of the USGenweb sites were uncomfortable with the fact that the ancestry.com name is now part of their URL. As such, the volunteers began moving their sites to different servers and new URLs. Since ancestry.com does not allow proper redirection of websites using conventional methods, the search engines are now experiencing thousands of bad links relating to the genealogy world.

I am in the process of writing to all the major search engines, explaining the situation, asking them to index these new pages more often and faster….in hopes to get the genealogy community back into the major search engines.

Sorry for any problems any of you are experiencing. If it relates to a Wisconsin Page, please let me know and I will see if I can find out where the pages went.

Waukesha in the Civil War

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

I found a Waukesha Freeman newspaper written in 1895 that featured Waukesha in the Civil War. I have transcribed some of it and placed it online as a link from the civil war section.

Included in that article is a list of Civil War soldiers that are buried in the county. I have updated the Civil War memorial page with that new information.
