Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I extracted almost 3000 names that were associated with Probate hearings in Waukesha County. The names are from the period 1860-1945. Most of the names are the name of the deceased, but some may be other people associated with the deceased such as administer name, executor name etc. For full records, you will need to contact the Waukesha County Probate office at the courthouse.

The probate hearing pages can be found at www.LinksToThePast.com/waukesha/probate.php.

Will these souls never have rest?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Posted: March 2, 2008 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
(article Ryan Haggerty and John Fauber)

Skeletal remains of about 1,600 people unearthed from paupers’ cemeteries on the Milwaukee County Grounds during the early 1990s represent a “unique and remarkable” opportunity for research and will be kept for academic study rather than reburied, the Wisconsin Historical Society has decided.

My take on it……
Will these souls never have rest? Indigents, homeless, orphans, unwed mothers, and unidentified victims of crimes, put in poorly marked or unmarked graves and abandoned. A nurses home built on top of their graves. Years later the bodies were unearthed. Instead of reburying the remains then, they were put in storage until someone figured out what to do with them. I am sure these immigrants would have never come to America if they knew how we treated our dead.

I understand how fascinating the research might be…..but I don’t understand why people think that just when they find something of interest, it gives them the right to use it for research.

Just let these people rest! They have lived a hard enough life.
