Polish Deaths and Pioneers Online
Thanks to Karen Duffy I have added a Polish name obituary index to the site. The index is of death notices or articles that appeared in the Polish Newspaper Kuryer Polski. This index of deaths begins with January 1900 and is now currently in 1925. More will be added as the project continues. Primarily, these are only the paid notices that announce local and regional deaths. Because obituaries of the time cost money, only a small amount of deaths were publicly announced in the papers. These notices may contain information related to birth, immigration, church affiliation and family names. The WWI years have very few paid death notices. Some entries listed on this index are also news articles announcing the deaths of prominent citizens or they may also be news items about tragedies. Occasionally the funeral itself was considered a news item. As the years progress, there are also more “thank you” notices or “PODZI?KOWANIE”. For this reason, each entry is marked by type: obituary, news article, or thank you. The date listed on the index is of publication and not of the actual death.
Karen also contributed an Index of Pionerzy Polscy (Polish Pioneers). This was a column that ran from March 1917-December 1917. Each week the newspaper would feature a Polish Pioneer and write their biography, including a photo. These articles tell so much about the person, such as birth, marriage, family, military, educational and work records.
Karen plans to contribute more to the site as time goes on. Please continue to look for her contributions.
You can find the Obit Index merged with the other death death notices.
