Prairie Home Waukesha

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

For those of you who have family/friends buried at Prairie Home in Waukesha…

I just discovered a free database of burials online through the city of Waukesha.
If you go to this page:
http://map.ci.waukesha.wi.us/cowgis/launchcem.htm?popup_blocked=true

Click on the Link on the bottom labeled Launch the GIS Cemetery Site!

After clicking you will get a map of the cemetery.
If you know what section your kin is buried in click on the section.
Click a few more times and you will see names appear for the surname of the folks buried in that section.

I will be working on an index for the map so you can use it as a quick reference.
I do have some plot numbers already available on my site. But it is not complete.

Really neat stuff! Almost like taking a walk and tripping over a tombstone.

U.S. WWII Missing in Action and POWs Free Database

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

This is a repost from Eastman’s online Blog. I thought it would be helpful to those of you who are looking for missing soldiers.

Online Database of U.S. WW II Missing in Action and POWs

The Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) has created the first electronic listing of missing personnel from the Second World War. The records came from two historical sources: Rosters of Military Personnel Whose Remains Were Not Recovered, 1951-1954 and The World War II Rosters of the Dead (All Services). POWs and MIAs are listed as well as those buried at sea. Entries on this website were created by corroborating names and service numbers appearing in both sources.

Use of the database is simple: go to the site’s web page and then look for the first letter of the person’s last name. There you will find separate listing for Army, Army Air Forces, Navy, Marine Corps and Others. The Others listings appear to all be civilians, including Merchant Marine. Service personnel who were buried at sea are listed in a separate section of the same web site.

Again, this web site contains lists only for those persons whose bodies were not recovered and those who were buried at sea.

You can access the “Service Personnel Not Recovered Following World War II” database at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/WWII_MIA.

Cemetery Visits

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Wednesday on the way home from downtown, my daughter and I decided to take a drive through some of the larger cemeteries. Funny how you pass some of these areas day after day and never stop. We visited Wisconsin Memorial Park, the largest cemetery in Waukesha County, then drove East to Pinelawn Memorial Park. After visiting them we decided to take a drive out to Forest Home. Next visits I will take the camera along and photograph some of the stones. I want to make more visits like that this summer. Call me weird but somehow cemeteries relax me.
